How do we approach root canal treatment?
At ndu Clinic, we take a thorough, considered approach to root canal assessment. Rather than defaulting to a conventional root canal procedure, we evaluate each case using advanced diagnostics to build a complete picture of the tooth's condition and its potential impact on your overall health.
Why is thorough assessment important?
Research in biological dentistry has highlighted that root canal treated teeth can, in some cases, harbour bacteria within the dentinal tubules (the microscopic channels within the tooth structure). Standard root canal procedures aim to clean and seal these channels, but complete sterilisation can be difficult to achieve given that a single tooth contains miles of microscopic tubules.
For most patients, a well-performed root canal causes no issues. However, for some individuals, particularly those with compromised immune function or chronic health conditions, a root canal treated tooth may become a source of low-grade infection or immune activation.
What diagnostics do we use?
- 3D cone-beam CT scanning: provides a detailed three-dimensional view of the tooth and surrounding bone, revealing pathology that standard 2D X-rays may miss
- Orotox testing: detects volatile sulphur compounds emanating from root canal treated teeth, indicating the possible presence of toxins or bacterial activity
- Tooth Meridian Chart: a reference tool used in biological dentistry to explore connections between individual teeth and systems or organs in the body
What are the alternatives?
If assessment indicates that a root canal treatment is not the best option for your situation, we will discuss alternatives including:
- Extraction and ceramic implant: removing the compromised tooth and replacing it with a biocompatible zirconia implant from Swiss Dental Solutions
- Metal-free bridge: a ceramic bridge supported by adjacent teeth
- Monitoring: in some cases, careful observation with regular reassessment may be appropriate
We present all options honestly, with their respective advantages and trade-offs, so that you can make an informed decision about your care.
