What is biological dentistry?

Biological dentistry is a philosophy and practice of oral healthcare that goes beyond treating teeth in isolation. At ndu Clinic on Harley Street, we recognise that the mouth is intimately connected to the rest of the body. The materials we place in your mouth, the infections we treat (or leave untreated), and the approach we take to each procedure all have consequences that can extend far beyond the jaw.

This is not a fringe idea. Decades of published research have established clear links between periodontal disease and cardiovascular conditions, between oral infections and systemic inflammation, and between certain dental materials and immune responses in susceptible individuals.

How does our approach differ?

At ndu Clinic, led by Dr. Goran Stojanovic, we apply this understanding in practical, everyday clinical decisions:

  • Materials matter. We exclusively use biocompatible, metal-free materials for restorations, implants, and fillings. No mercury amalgam. No metal posts. Our ceramic implants come from Swiss Dental Solutions (SDS), a leading manufacturer of zirconia implants.
  • Diagnostics go deeper. We use 3D cone-beam CT scanning rather than relying solely on 2D X-rays. We may recommend Orotox testing to detect toxicity from treated teeth, or MELISA testing for metal hypersensitivity.
  • The whole picture. During your consultation, we ask about energy levels, gut health, sleep quality, and nutritional status. We look at your tooth meridian chart. We consider whether a dental issue might be connected to symptoms elsewhere in the body.
  • Safe protocols. When removing existing mercury amalgam fillings, we follow the IAOMT SMART protocol with full protective measures for you, our team, and the environment.

What is the tooth-body connection?

The Tooth Meridian Chart is a reference used in biological dentistry that maps relationships between individual teeth and organs or systems in the body. Each tooth sits on an energy meridian (similar to those used in acupuncture) that connects to specific areas of the body.

For example, the upper and lower front teeth are linked to the kidney and bladder meridian, while the wisdom teeth relate to the heart and small intestine. While this framework is not universally accepted in conventional dentistry, many biological dentists use it as one of several diagnostic tools to explore possible connections between dental conditions and systemic symptoms.

Who is biological dentistry for?

Our patients in London come to us for a wide range of reasons. Some want mercury-free, metal-free dentistry as a matter of principle. Others are investigating whether dental issues might be contributing to chronic health concerns such as fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, or digestive problems. Many have done their own research and are looking for a practitioner who takes these concerns seriously.

Whatever your starting point, we welcome you. Our role is to listen, assess thoroughly, and present your options honestly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is biological dentistry?

Biological dentistry is an approach to oral healthcare that considers the impact of dental treatments and materials on the whole body. It prioritises biocompatible, non-toxic materials, avoids mercury amalgam, and addresses the links between oral health and systemic conditions.

How is a biological dentist different from a regular dentist?

A biological dentist uses the same clinical skills as a conventional dentist but applies a broader lens. We consider how dental materials, infections, and treatments affect overall health. We avoid mercury, prefer metal-free restorations, and may recommend additional diagnostics like 3D imaging or biocompatibility testing.

Is biological dentistry evidence-based?

Yes. Biological dentistry draws on peer-reviewed research linking oral health to systemic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and chronic inflammation. The materials and protocols we use (such as the SMART protocol for amalgam removal) are developed by recognised professional bodies including the IAOMT.

Do you accept NHS patients?

ndu Clinic is a private practice. All treatments are privately funded, which allows us to dedicate the time and resources needed for personalised, biological dental care.

What conditions can biological dentistry help with?

Beyond standard dental concerns (cavities, gum disease, missing teeth), patients consult us for unexplained fatigue, chronic inflammation, autoimmune-related symptoms, heavy metal concerns, and conditions that may be linked to oral infections or incompatible dental materials.
